Great Ayton Community Archaeology Project
The Great Ayton Community Archaeology Project started in 2002 with the intention of doing ‘hands-on’ research, initially into local archaeology. We were awarded a two-year grant from the Local Heritage Initiative (LHI) and engaged a professional archaeologist, Kevin Cale of Community Archaeology Ltd, to work with us.
After successful completion of the first two years, a second LHI grant was obtained to cover a further three years. This widened the scope of the project to include aspects of industrial, social and building history.
We have some twenty-five active members, meeting every Wednesday. The wide range of topics under investigation means that individual members can always find something that meets their particular interests.
